It’s important to note, before you get all in a huff and a puff, that this bbq burger in fact is not barbecued. I know, very sad. That being said, it does harness the delicious bbq flavour without the need to break out the charcoal.
Ingredients
- lean ground beef
- burger buns of your choice*
- 1 onion
- 2 Tbsp butter
- grated cheese
- BBQ sauce*
- mayonaise
- apple cider vinegar
Method
- Slice onions thinly and place in a cold skillet. Add butter and let cook on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until light brown and sticky
- Preheat a cast iron pan with medium-high heat, just to the point of smoking
- Spread a thin layer of butter on each of you buns and toast them in your pan until golden brown
- Take your lean ground beef and form them into balls. I usually aim for a size little bit bigger than a golf ball
- Season your meatballs with salt and pepper, and roll in a little bit of olive oil
- Place meatballs in cast iron pan and press down on them until they resemble a beef patty. At this point, leave them! Let them caramelize on this one side.
- After about 3-4 minutes, once you see a deep brown colour develop, flip to the other side.
- It is at this point you can top with shredded cheese of your choice (I used cheddar). Then cover to allow cheese to melt
- Mix equal parts bbq sauce and mayo to create a base sauce. Add apple cider vinegar to taste to add necessary acidity to your spread. Season with salt and pepper
- It’s at this point that you can add everything on top of each other and form your burgers! Add green stuff or red stuff if that’s your jam and enjoy!
