Before we begin, let me just say:
I’m not American.
Now, I don’t mean anything derogatory by that, I simply mean to say, that I’m not as opinionated nor versed in the legendary flavours of the In-and-Out franchise. Though I can probably count on one hand the amount of times that I’ve had animal fries, I’ve had it enough times to know that I’m into it. Like, seriously into it.
So with that preamble out of the way, enjoy my interpretation of animal fries on a budget.
Ingredients
- freezer fries (I’m impartial to Cavendish)
- 1 diced onion
- 1 Tbsp butter
- 2 Tbsp ketchup
- 2 Tbsp mayo
- 2 diced dill pickles
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or American – if that’s your thing)
- salt and pepper to taste
- *1 tsp smoked paprika
Method
- Cook your freezer fries according to the instructions. Air fry, bake, deep fry. You do you.
- Put onion, butter and salt/pepper into a pan over medium-low heat and let it cook out until you end up with something deliciously caramelized. Stir periodically to make sure nothing has burned into oblivion.
- Mix ketchup, mayo, and dill pickles together. Season with salt and pepper. If you so fancy, add smoked paprika to this mix. It won’t be In-and-Out “authentic” but it does taste pretty bomb.
- When fries are cooked, top with shredded cheese and let it melt in a 400ºF oven. If in a pinch, microwave works too.
- Once cheese is melted, top with caramelized onions and ketchup/mayo sauce.
